Top 9 Tips for Safe Wood Burning This Winter

Now that the weather has turned cooler, lots of people are starting to turn their thoughts to staying warm this winter.  In Maine and other states with cold climates, wood burning is still a common source of home heating, but it’s important to do it safely.  Make sure you are prepared with these top 10 safety tips for wood burning from our insurance agency.

1. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Detectors should be placed throughout your home.  Make sure you check the batteries periodically.  Using a twice-yearly event like Daylight Saving Time is a good way to remember.  Want a reminder when it’s time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors?  Click here to set your free reminder now!

2. Never leave a fire unattended.
It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to leave it for a “quick second” while you run to the store.  Always remember to keep a close eye on pets and children.

3. Get an annual chimney inspection.
These inspections and any related cleanings should be done by a qualified professional who can minimize the risk of fires and monoxide poisonings.  A list of several CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps within 50 miles of Bangor can be found at: http://www.csia.org/default.aspx?tabid=174&Zip=04401

4. Build your fire safely.
Always start your fire with kindling or a commercial firelighter to start a pile of firewood or logs near the rear of the fireplace.  NEVER use flammable liquids.

5. Keep your chimney clear and install a chimney cap.
Make sure any tree branches are at least 20 feet away from the opening of your chimney.  A chimney cap will provide additional protection by keeping falling debris and small animals out of the chimney.

6. Use a screen.
A fireplace screen placed in front of a fireplace is a key safety step.  This metal mesh can prevent stray sparks from burning holes in carpet or upholstery and igniting any nearby flammable items.

7. Burn the right stuff.
Never burn old Christmas trees or any treated wood.  Always make sure you’re choosing well-seasoned wood that has been split at least 6 months to a year and has been stored properly.  Dry wood provides a higher percentage of usable heat.

8. Keep your hearth clear.
Make sure any furniture is at least 3 feet or more away from the heart.  Any upholstery, fabric, curtains or other combustible materials are accidents waiting to happen.

9. Review your homeowner’s insurance.
In case of the worst, make sure to account for any changes to your property in the past year and ensure that your homeowner’s coverage is adequate and up-to-date.  Not sure if you need additional coverage?  Contact the Darling’s Agency at (888) 222-4813 for a free, no-hassle quote.
